This is not a team event .Students interested to take part in this contest must register on OJASS 11 website.

IBM – SOFT RACE

“Software is the soul to the lifeless body of the hardware.”

Programming today is a race between software engineers stirring to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the universe is winning. Software is like entropy. It is difficult to grasp, weighs nothing, and obeys the second law of thermodynamics; i.e. it always increases.

Workshop : Ethical Hacking 5th-6th March

Why is it that more than 10 per cent of the data losses worldwide occur because of only a hundred lines of code? Why on earth would an antivirus tool become the world’s second most widely used class of software after an operating system? Why your system sometimes appear as being controlled by a stranger? A lot more of such whys are there that we want answered. Yes! Believe me. Such queries have got answers. The key to avoiding virus infections lies in understanding how they work. There is no other way to know it ,than gaining insight about esoteric art of hacking. Hacking is the most exhilarating game on the planet. And you may be surprised to discover that ultimately the Internet is safeguarded not by law enforcement agencies, not by giant corporations, but by a worldwide network of, yes, hackers. Get an insight into their modus operandi, this 5th and 6th of March at Ojass’11 at NIT Jamshedpur.

The cause of losses amounting to millions of dollars due to data/network usage loss, or even those wasted CPU cycles on your PC that you think don’t count for any money is ignorance. No virus, no Trojan, no worm, no matter how powerful, can get to you if you know how they work and squish them right at the entry point. Or even better, never let the entry point be insecure. OJASS 2011 in association with Kyrion Digital securities has organised this workshop to nab that ignorance and assure a better and secure digital life.

Kyrion Digital Securities has worked with top software giants, namely Microsoft and Indian State & Central Cyber Team (CBI and ATS) & successfully conducted workshops in top Engineering colleges of India such as IISc Bangalore, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee, IIT Guwahati, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras,NIT Warangal,NIT Calicut, NIT Kurukshetra, NSIT Delhi, IIIT Allahabad ,etc.

The focus of this workshop is to teach how to protect yourselves from the menace of hacking. It is designed to provide the adequate knowledge to the aspiring hacking and Information Security geeks. It includes making you aware of the current shortcomings which give rise to bad security systems and methods to prevent it.

Hands on Robotics… 26th – 27th Feb ’11

Robots have always ruled our imaginations.Autonomous robots with reasoning capabilities and the ability to move around freely will be in demand in the coming decades. It’s exciting to see how a machine behaves when it is endowed with logic to decide, interpret and react to its surroundings. In fact, it is difficult to find someone who is not fascinated by “intelligent” machines. Machines that can walk, talk and see invoke a kid in each one of us.

There has been a dearth of good source that teach you how to build an autonomous robot yourself. Often, while learning robotics soon you’re overwhelmed with the daunting mathematical equations, dreadful diagrams and afeeling that building a robot is too technical and difficult.

Ojass’11 in association with Ablab Solutions is organising a hands-on workshop on building an autonomous robot yourself , this 26th and 27th of Feb. at NIT Jamshedpur. Workshop is planned to teach the students to make an autonomous Robo- NFS . A general curly path of white colour is there for the robot to reach the destination. But the twist is that at some points in the path there are short cuts of yellow or green colour. The robot should be programmed in such a way so that it could judge the shortcuts on its own. You will have to make an autonomous robot which has to choose the shortest path and reach the destination first, and win the competition.

We will start by understanding the basics of robot designing. There are individual modules dedicated to each aspect of building an autonomous robot;which are mechanics, electronics and programming. Each module proceeds in a very lucid way.

The best way to learn something is to dive-in! And this hands-on experience lets you actually build the bot yourself as you move along the workshop. The complete kits are provided by Ablab Solutions. Everything from basic electronics to complete coding on the microprocessors will be taught in the workshop.Training material in the form of books/ CDs will be provided two weeks prior to the workshop. At the end of workshop, a competition will be held among all the participating teams there, and the whole WORKSHOP FEE WILL BE REIMBURSED TO WINNER TEAM.

Get Enlightened…Go Green… @guru gyan

Each one of us can make a difference to the environment around us and benefit ourselves by adopting green tools, technology and practices. With the mission to change attitudes and behaviour of people and to protect and conserve the environment, Ojass’11 recognizes the critical need of spreading awareness about the need of Green-Tech. We hope with such an endeavour, Ojass is encouraging the young minds to conceptualise and innovate smarter ideas, and suggest possibly a better way of helping the environment.

Ojass’11 promotes the above awareness, and as such we invite you to be mesmerised by the brilliant oratory by our special guest, the Waterman of India, Mr. Rajendra Singh. A learning experience with the man who has been leading the Tarun Bharat Sangh, an organization supported by the United Nations, USIAD, and the World bank. He was highly appreciated and recognized for the efforts he made for harvesting rain water by building check dams in Rajasthan. It is because of this he is popularly known as the ‘Jal Purush’ or the ‘Water man of India’.

Since 1985, Tarun Bhagat Sangh, headed by Rajendra Singh have been working in the Alwar district of Rajasthan, focusing on the revival of Johads, streams and rivers in the area. They were of the opinion that without water in region no other significant development could take place. And with the successful implementation of the programme and with the total dedication of all the team members along with the cooperation of the villagers, today more than 4,500 working Johads dot Alwar and surrounding districts. (Johad is concave structure which collects and store water throughout the year. It is used for the drinking purpose by humans and cattle).

Above all what is really commendable is that they work for the revitalization of the five rivers that went dry for the long time. River Ruparel, that went dead, has stared flowing again after the span of three decades. Even the Arvari River basin, which was once barren became a water source, due to the active participation and hard work of the team members. On the other sides rejuvenation of the traditional water harvesting structures on such a large scale is a positive indication of development in the state. And it was definitely a sincere effort by Rajendra Singh for eradicating the scarcity of water in the rural areas of Rajasthan. In many villages people have started building Johads of their own. Now the women need not to travel to the far away places to collect water, fuel wood and fodder. They educated the mind of the people and made them understand the importance of water conservation. It is a perfect solution for the long standing problem of water in the remote areas. Water harvesting is a good way to tackle with the problem of drought and floods.

Organization of Rajendra Singh has overall 45 full time employees and 230 part time workers. He is a charismatic personality and the real hero of poor. He spends eight months of the year on road working day and night without seeing the face of his wife and son. Until 1984, he knew nothing about the water and its conservation methods. It were the villagers who showed me the value of water, and till date The work done by the Rajendra Singh is a inspiration for the million others in the nation.

So get ready for a tete-a-tete with the man who adopted green measures for the environment, changing attitudes and behaviours of numerous people creating awareness for the protection and conservation of the environment!!!
